Love locks: the romantic custom
All over the world, lovers swear their intimate connection with love locks. To do this, they usually attach their engraved love lock to a bridge. They then throw the key into the river to seal their eternal love. By the engraving and often also by the form (e.g. a heart) they always recognize their lock. In this way, they also set a visible sign of their love for others.
In Hungary, the custom has existed since the 1980s. The love lock began its triumphal march after Federico Moccia published his book “Ich steh auf dich” in 2006. He described how two lovers invoke their union with a lock on the Ponte Milvio in Rome and throw the key into the Tiber. In 2008, the first locks with individual engravings appeared on the Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne, and numerous others followed. Most cities tolerate the romantic custom. However, locks have already had to be removed from bridges because they threatened the statics of the structures. Because the custom has become so popular, however, most of those responsible are looking for creative alternatives: The many love locks on the Heringsdorf pier on Usedom, for example, had to be removed because of damage to the bridge railing. Instead, a glass cylinder with these locks was placed in the middle of the bridge. Couples on Usedom can still testify to their love: by immortalizing their locks on a metal grid around this glass cylinder!
Other couples also keep the locks as a lucky charm and sign of their love and give the key to their partner: as a symbolic key to their heart!
